Oh won’t you stay, just a little bit longer?

***Disclaimer*** Family, I’m not in labor. I’m probably not going to have this baby for awhile. Don’t get your hopes up, and don’t call and ask if I’m in labor. I will be annoyed. Kthx. :)

So last night, I had regular contractions for at least an hour. I was trying to go to sleep when I noticed they were coming sort of regularly, so I thought I’d time them. Yep, every ten minutes.

They fizzled out, as I thought/hoped they might, but still it made me think that I really need to get my tush in gear!

These things weren’t like the Braxton-Hicks contractions I’d been having for the last few months. With the B-H, it was just an all-over tightening that I could see and feel. It wasn’t painful, but slightly uncomfortable if I tried to move too much before it was over.

The ones last night were low instead of all over. I wouldn’t call it painful, but there was some discomfort similar to a PMS-y cramp feeling. Lasted for a little bit, then went away. Then came back 10 minutes later.

I got up, went to the bathroom and then fixed myself a bowl of cereal. Then, I thought the best thing to do would be to try to get some sleep. If it petered out, fine, I’d get some rest. And if this was the real deal, I’m pretty sure I’d wake up. Cuz I don’t think many people have babies while they’re sound asleep.

I know that these sorts of contractions can happen for many weeks before anything really happens, so I’m not getting my hopes up.

I just hope that he gives me at least a few more days to get things ready. First of all, last night when I was flossing, part of a filling for a cavity popped out. Yes, that happened to me just a few months ago. This time, it was a different tooth.  I’m hoping I can get in there sometime today to have it looked at and fixed. I do think my current dentist filled that one, as well as the last one she had to fix. I’ll have her check my records to make sure it was that tooth, and if it was, then I’ll have her repair it but then I’ll switch to a new dentist.

A few months ago, she scraped a small filling loose and I had to have it repaired. One time, ok. But two? It’s making me think she’s not very good at cavities. I don’t have time to go find a new dentist right now, and I barely have time to get this fixed as it is. I’m annoyed.

So yah, there’s one reason why I need this little guy to stay put.

Number two: He doesn’t have a pediatrician yet. Whoops. I’m working on it, but it’s not so easy. We might just have to go with our best guess and if we need to switch later on, then that’s what we’ll have to do.

Number three: I haven’t had my Group B strep test yet. That’s tomorrow, and I believe it takes a few days for the results to come back. I understand that if you haven’t had the test done, it’s standard proceedure to give a laboring lady an IV of antibiotics, just in case she’s positive for the bacteria. I’d really hate to have an unnecessary IV.

Number four: His room isn’t totally ready and the house isn’t in order. These things are totally minor, but not having them done would cause me unnecessary stress. I need to do some more batches of his laundry, get rid of some junk in there, and do some heavy-duty cleaning.

Four compelling reasons why he should stay put for a little while longer, yeah?

So if anything, last night’s little episode was a good reminder for me that he’s going to show up whether we’re ready or not, so it would do me some good to finish getting ready. I still could be pregnant for six more weeks, in theory. But, I’m starting to think he really is going to be here this month.

Guess the birth date and weight!

I’m nine months pregnant! 36 weeks! Oh man!

Just for fun, I’d love it if you’d guess my baby’s birthdate and weight. You won’t win a prize, but you will have the satisfaction of being right! Who doesn’t love that?

On December 9, I’ll be 37 weeks and technically full-term.

My technical due date is Tuesday, December 30. The absolute latest I’ll go will be January 13, which is when I’d be 42 weeks. I’d probably be induced at that point (let’s hope it doesn’t come to that!).

So, let’s say he could be born anytime between December 9 and January 13.

I was born nine days before my mom’s due date. My little sister was born on her due date (it was on her own — no induction). We each weighed 7 lbs. and a few ounces.

Shane was born a few weeks early, but he’s a twin so that skews things a little.

If you need any more details before you make your guess, lemme know!

35 weeks

All I want to know is: Where are my guts?! The “baby house” is now just mere millimeters from my sternum. When I hear my stomach rumble, the sounds don’t even seem like they’re coming from me. My stomach is wedged under my ribcage waaay up high. No wonder heartburn strikes so hard lately — there isn’t much distance for that stomach acid to travel!

All of my intestines and whatever organs typically fill my abdomen have been smooshed out to the side or backwards or who knows where (and have been for awhile). Sure, my belly sticks out and that helps there to be more room for things, but goodness! I bet my body will be relieved to have things move to where they once were.

Fortunately, it isn’t hard for me to breathe since he’s positioned so low. Whew. My baby is so courteous.

What’s happening according to

Your baby doesn’t have much room to maneuver now that he’s over 18 inches long and tips the scales at 5 1/4 pounds (pick up a honeydew melon). Because it’s so snug in your womb, he isn’t likely to be doing somersaults anymore, but the number of times he kicks should remain about the same. His kidneys are fully developed now, and his liver can process some waste products. Most of his basic physical development is now complete — he’ll spend the next few weeks putting on weight.

See what your baby looks like this week.

I’m in no hurry

Except for Bonnie on Family Guy, no woman is perpetually pregnant. I suspect that as a pregnant lady approaches her due date, she starts to get especially antsy about getting that baby out soon, and wonders if her child will ever be born.

Maybe it has to do with her being a bit uncomfortable. After all, with a giant belly, it’s pretty tricky to get a good night’s sleep. And let’s not forget the frequent trips to the bathroom, heartburn, and increase in body temperature. Yep, she might be ready for that all to end. Maybe she’d like a glass of wine already.

Maybe her desire to press the fast-forward button on her pregnancy is hormonal. Maybe the body does this to acknowledge that, yes, babies come out at the grand finale of a pregnancy. It’s good to mentally shift from being a pregnant lady to being a mama, since that’s what’s going to happen.

Based on these things, I totally get why some women are really ready to get the show on the road by the time they hit their ninth month.

Not me, though. (Well, I still have a week to go before I hit nine months…)

I know that at this time, I’m enjoying the absolute easiest time of being a parent that I’ll ever experience. I know exactly where my baby is (and I even have a reasonable guess on how he’s positioned!). I know all of his needs are being met. He’s warm enough, cozy enough, hydrated and fed, and when he has to “go to the bathroom” he just does. Doesn’t need to be changed. I don’t have to do a thing except take good care of myself. How easy is that?

After he’s born, all of that changes.

We’ll have to actually do things to take care of him. It sounds silly, I know, but when you compare it to simply being pregnant, it’s much more complicated! More fun, but there’s certainly more to it.

I’m one of those lucky people who have had a relatively easy pregnancy. I like being pregnant. I feel pretty good most of the time. However, I have no idea how labor is going to go, and I have no idea how good of a parent I’ll actually be. Likely, I’ll be fine, but I really have no idea what I’m doing, and that’s a tiny bit scary.

So yeah, I’m approaching my 35th week with about two to seven weeks to go. Two is a super-short time to finish my preparations (too short, if you ask me!) and seven sounds like a long ways away still. By then, I’ll probably be singing a different tune. Something that goes like “You’ve gotta get outta this place, if it’s the last thing you ever do…”

For now, I think he can stay put as long as he wants. :) I’m anxious to meet him, but at the same time, I’m in no hurry.

Surprise baby shower!

I had a surprise baby shower today! I attend a ladies’ group for women who are new to the Pittsburgh area. We meet weekly, and at today’s meeting I walked in and “Surprise!” a shower for me! I was more than tickled.

They each got me a baby book or two, I got a generous gift card to Target, a handy dandy ‘diaper cake’ and a homemade quilt. The quilt was made from fabric that everyone contributed. I know we’ll cherish these gifts for many years to come.

I wasn’t expecting a shower and was truly surprised and happy about their kind gesture. These ladies have really been awesome and have made living in Pittsburgh so much easier on me. Don’t know what I’d do without ’em!

I don’t have pictures from the shower yet, but here’s some that I took when I got home:
