Johnny’s first real haircut
It’s amazing Johnny was able to go almost 18 months before his first real haircut! He was born with just a little bit of fuzz on his head, so I guess it’s understandable.
He had two minor trims in the back in recent weeks because we wanted to stall as much as we could.
But yesterday, I decided his hair was just too long. It was starting to get in his eyes.
Shane is the barber of the house (cuts his own hair, and now Johnny’s!). He used clippers. We tried to distract him by having him stand at the sink and splash in the water, but he just wouldn’t hold still, even if he used scissors.
So I nursed him. While Shane cut his hair.
And it worked! He was looking around with wide eyes trying to figure out what was happening to him, but as long as he kept nursing he didn’t seem to care that much.
I guess that’s benefit #432 of nursing past a year.
And speaking of nursing, I thought he was about weaned. He had recently gone 24 hours without.
But then came 5 new teeth, four of which were molars. He was in a lot of pain, drooling everywhere, whining all day — it was not fun for any of us.
His nursing increased quite a bit during that time, understandably.
I can’t tell if the top two molars have come all the way through. He won’t let me get a good look, but what I’ve been able to see, they still need to come a bit further.
Once those molars finish their way in, he’ll have 12 teeth! Just 8 more for his baby set. Aww.
The nesting begins…in my head, anyway.
One of the perks of being pregnant is you get this great motivation to get organized, do some deep cleaning, and start and finish a bunch of little projects. Or, that’s the theory. I don’t think it hits hard until the third trimester.
But I’m already starting to think of some nesting-type projects that I’ve been meaning to do anyway. Now I just have a timetable to work with!
Just a few:
Declutter! I’m just amazed at how much stuff we accumulate, even though we tend to get rid of stuff every time we move. Which is every few years or so. I want to sell off things that have some sort of value and put that money in our house fund. Getting rid of stuff means our small apartment feels less cramped, and it’s that many fewer things we have to move later!
I’ll keep track of what I sell and what I just toss or donate so I can be motivated to get rid of even more.
I haven’t sold anything on eBay for awhile so it’s time to get some auctions listed!
Any of the smaller things that don’t particularly have much cash value, but can still be useful to someone — I think I’ll see if my pal will let me put some things in her yard sale later this summer. Or just plain donate it and be done with it all.
Organize! We need to get some more shelves to mount on the walls. We have such minimal closet space. It’s kind of sad. Adding some sturdy shelves on the walls will really help! A month or two ago, I bought a 5 or 6-shelf freestanding…shelf. It’s strong enough to hold something like 150 lbs. per shelf. It’s in our bedroom and we’ve got all sorts of miscellany on it. It’s not pretty but it does keep some things off the floor!
It was $35 or so at Home Depot. Might get another, even.
Clean. Yeah, yay. Just some spring-cleaning type of things. I’ll save that for way later. I’ll need to be good and motivated to do the deep clean!
Cook! I’m planning on filling my freezer with meals and snacks once again. I want to expand from the types of things I did last time so I’ll need to experiment with recipes and see what freezes and reheats well. Plus, I’m going to make a list of some really simple meals we can quickly throw together.
Bible in 90 update
I’m still on pace with reading through the Bible in 90 days. I’m going to do day #15 reading in a few minutes, but I wanted to post about some things I’ve read in Deuteronomy yesterday.
Some parts really jumped out at me, especially since we’re trying to figure out how to save up enough for a down payment on a house and what we should do in that regard.
Even wisdom from Moses’ time can be helpful to modern situations! Here’s some (all NIV). Read these!
Deut. 8:3
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Deut 8:11-14
Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Deut. 8:17-20
You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
19 If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed. 20 Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.

Wow! And amen.
December baby club
It seems I know quite a few mothers who are expecting children in December! Since all the ones I know about are finally public, here they are:
- Jes, third child — mid-December. But she tends to go early. She could be in November! I’m pegging her to go first out of this bunch. Eldest is Lexi, age 3, and second is Caylee, age 20 months. I think?
- Karen — first baby — early December. She thinks she could go in November, too. But she’s a first-timer so it’s tough to say
- Emily – second baby — late November/early December? She has the closest spacing out of the bunch, as her daughter Lucy is 9 months old. Wow!
- Jessie — Second child – Christmasish. I hope she’ll deliver just a few days before that so she can be home for Christmas! Libbie is 19 months.
- Joanna – first child — went and told the internet today! Due late December, possibly early January. I’m rooting for the December baby so she can keep her insurance deductibles in one calendar year. And get that $1,000 tax credit for 2010
- Kacie (me) — second child — due mid-December. I was 10 days before 40 weeks with Johnny (just 6 days from 18 months!) so watch me go 10 days past this time to balance that out. Hard telling. But pretty sure it will be December.
13 week belly shot
I’m not thrilled that I have a belly shot for you at a mere 13 weeks. Good gravy! I’m in a maternity shirt and skirt because it’s a little more loose than regular stuff, though I don’t really need maternity yet. Or do I…!? This pic was taken right after lunch. So there’s that.
And yes, there’s only one baby in there.
For reference, here’s me in the same shirt at like 18.5 weeks with Johnny. I’m not as big as I was there, but still! I wasn’t even really showing at all until about 18 weeks.
