The cost breakdown of camping

My pal Ashley has a great post breaking down the cost of camping — including basic camping supplies and average campground fees.

I don’t have much experience camping. The one time I actually did sleep in a tent in the woods (Gnaw Bone, Indiana. Camptastic. Hi, y’all!) — it was sort of a bizarre experience for a lot of reasons.

I had an extremely hard time falling asleep on the cold, hard ground in a tent full of people.

Going potty in the woods? Not my favorite.

Maybe I’m prissier than I’d like to think I am.

But Ashley’s cost break-down shows that camping really can be a cheap way to have a little down time — much cheaper than staying at a budget hotel.

It’s so significant that my husband just might be able to convince me to give it another go.

Go visit her post and share your experiences.

  1. My experience camping at state parks in Georgia, South Carolina, and Indiana is that they have bathrooms for campers (included in part of the fee) with all the modern conveniences like toilets, showers, etc. I’ve never had to go in the woods. :-) And most of the campgrounds I’ve been to haven’t been very secluded – I could definitely tell that other people were camping there. Unless you go in an off season or not during the weekend, it’s not so isolated as it might seem.

You can get air mattresses that are raised off the ground. Paul and I used one when we visited his aunt in California. That or a cot would get you off the ground if that would help you be more comfortable. :-)

  2. We’ve gone camping quite a bit since we got married. We knew we would want to camp a lot so someone threw us an “entertainment” shower where we got most of our camping gear. Plus, people have given us stuff for gifts so we really haven’t bought anything. It is more work then going to hotels and eating out but it’s still a lot of fun!! We took Lib once when she was still crawling and that was a pain but once she could walk it was waaay more fun. I would definitely go this summer. Johnny will love it!
