Gearing up for fall clothes

Is it weird that I’m daydreaming about 45-degree crisp air, crunchy leaves, bonfires, snuggling with a cozy blanket and a bowl of chili? Oh, and football? Can’t forget football in this tahn.  Anyway, I’ve always loved autumn and I’m ready to give it a proper welcoming, even though it’s still August.

I’m going through my fall/winter storage bin to take inventory of what still fits. This time last year, I was rocking the maternity jeans and shirts. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen my old unpregnant stuff, and some of it has got to go.

I’m making a list of what sorts of items would round out my wardrobe (khaki pants and brown boots are at the top of my list). I’ll keep my eyes out for these things as I browse thrift stores and sales racks. I’m concentrating on timeless items so that I can wear these things for years (hopefully) without looking too dated.

Making a clothes shopping list helps me avoid impulse purchases and it enables me to  find the best deal possible. If, in August, I know that Shane could use a new winter coat, I do have a bit of time to find one before he actually needs it.

And, I’m looking at my summery items to see if I can re-purpose them through the fall. Maybe I can layer tanks in a new way or try some boots with a skirt, for instance.

I’ve gotta be honest — most of the time I’m a big fashion “Don’t!” I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Stacy & Clinton jumped out of some bushes and made me change my outfit. I can’t help it. I mean well, but I often fall short.

So lately, I’ve been reading some style blogs and I’m gaining plenty of insight and inspiration.

One of my favorites is Already Pretty. Sally has a teacher’s heart and is oh-so-sweet. Check out her recent posts about The Virtually Free Wardrobe Revamp and Showstopping Style on a Pauper’s Budget.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, lady! SO glad to hear those posts were helpful …

  2. Another fabulous fashion blog
not exactly all about frugal stuff but she does find some great things at thrift stores! :)

  3. I’m slightly insluted when you deem yourself a fashion “don’t,” since you showed up at my house yesterday wearing the same outfit I was wearing. I think you (and I) were rockin’ the Old Navy polo!

  4. You’re right, super inspiring! I tire of my clothes too quickly. And as you say about yourself, I’m not good at imagining different looks for different pieces of clothing, so my closet just piles and piles up. I think for my fall shopping, I’m going to look for some more versatile pieces, and try harder and making what I’ve already got fit together. Thanks for the post, and the links :)

  5. Lol! Oh, yeah that. Well, I like the polo and I think it’s ok! But I made sort of an effort that day. Hee!

  6. Also, Renee — you always look classy! I could learn from you.

Hey! I'm Kacie, wife to Shane and mother to Jonathan (7), Vivienne (5) and Amelia (2) . I write about my family's finance: how we save money, improve our spending, and plan for the future.

I hope I can inspire and encourage you to improve your situation. See disclosure.

I'm adopting a much slower-paced posting schedule, and treating this as a hobby blog now.
