About two weeks ago I made my first loaf, it turned into an absolute disaster. However, my MIL who was excellent at bread, told my husband that your first attempt is usually a disaster. I've overcome the disaster and now have successfully made a variety of different breads. I have a recipe for Honey Wheat bread that is outstanding if your interested. I poured a little in a custard cup, added a little sugar and warm water and checked back in 5 minutes. It was bubbling and growing and smelling yeasty. My 5 yo was fascinated. As for the temp, try it on your wrist. It shouldn't be any warmer than you'll use for Junior's bath water! I had a jar of yeast that had been sitting in a box since before Passover this year and I wondered if it was still good. I poured a little in a custard cup, added a little sugar and warm water and checked back in 5 minutes.

It was bubbling and growing and smelling yeasty. My 5 yo was fascinated.
