I didn't work with my second either, but I found that my son would not nurse well (after he was a week old) so I was so thankful for the pump. But I agree, you probably shouldn't buy one before the child is born. I had a manual pump also, but um, not fun to do. Also, I was somewhat independent so even staying home, I found that the breast pump was handy because other people could feed my child and I could actually leave him without having to hurry home within that 3 hour span. I agree about the Medela Pump N Style Breast pump. With working, I’m away from the baby so I really needed a good pump. She is a year old now and I’m still using the Pump N Style (she had a milk & soy allergy – so I can’t wean her to other milks yet.) But – you might not have such a big need for the breast pump, so a manual one might be just fine.

Rite Aid’s rebates have been great lately! I am loving all the baby deals :)

I’ve heard great things about the Medela PIS, but I don’t think I’ll buy one at this point.

I’ll be a SAHM and won’t need to pump exclusively. Also, since it’s pretty expensive (even used), I think I’d rather rent an electric pump from the hospital if I needed to, just to be sure a pump of this nature would be useful to me.

For now, I’ll get a good quality manual pump for occasional use, and I’ll go from there if my needs change.

Seriously, invest in a Medela Pump N Style Breast pump. It is an electric double pump and you will NOT regret it. I bought mine at Target with gift cards from the shower, but you can get one on Ebay or Craig's list and then you can buy the accessory kit at Babies R Us for $24.00 or so. Anyway, I definitely highly recommend it. It has been through two babies, plus borrowed twice and it still works well.Gretchen's last blog post..Check out my Word Press website for my new post

I would caution about buying a lot of baby products ahead of time. Some kids react badly to different brands of wipes and some are not very nice to use. They can, of course, later be donated to charities such as women's shelters but still. My own family found baby wash cloths and Johnsons baby soap were the only choice for two babies. One did fine with just about anything, the others found a "brand preference" based on skin reaction.Lisa's last blog post..Down to the wire

I spent $285 on a really nice breast pump. Used it for four weeks while I had an absolute miserable time… (had trouble with milk supply, infections, etc)…. and then switched to formula . Ended up selling the pump to a friend for $100. UGH.

If I had to do it all over again, I don’t think I would buy a pump until after I was absolutely certain I was going to stick with breastfeeding. There are so many things that may make you change your mind… you just don’t know until you’ve been there.

Not to be nosy, but be careful with the pumps. At work I see so many moms who buy one of those and then realize it is useless because they needed a much stronger pump. The other bad thing is women who buy used pumps and then find out later they don’t work (or are on their last leg). It’s a waste if they buy a pump for $30 or less and then have to throw that one away and buy an expensive one. With breastpumps, you truly get what you pay for.

Thanks for the post, I’m going to have to go and check my local Walgreens to see if they have the pumps on clearance since one of my relatives will be needing one soon.
