Congrats!! I loved babyfit.com. There is a great community that discusses the trends/needs for new moms and also a place to enter nutrition/exercise!

I go to www.babywhisperer.com a lot. It's a great site about how to handle other issues like feeding and sleeping. It's amazing how important those two things become when you have a baby.

There are a million other posts on the site also. Plus a "couch" to cry or vent on. A much used couch sometimes! I have made a ton of great friends from all over the world on that site.

Big congrats to you BTW

Wow. Congratulation. My one advice is to make sure you sign up for coupons. There are plenty of companies that want to send you free samples and discount coupons.

Yay! Congratulations! I hope you're not feeling nauseous. Here are my recommendations:

The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth (Henci Goer). Also, you might want to see The Business of Being Born. I don't know if you want to go natural or not, but I just wish I had done a little research before letting my OB do all the planning for me!

This is one of my friends I've recently made since becoming a mom (she is a labor doula), and her blog is so awesome to learn from. Cloth diapering, babywearing, natural parenting, etc: http://inexplicableways.wordpress.com/

And here's my experience with cloth diapering, which has been fun and so much easier than I expected: http://babyfingers.blogspot.com/search/label/cloth%20diaper

Mothering Magazine. Parenting, along with other mainstream mags, are full of the same-old same-old stuff (and a bunch of ads) and most of it isn't that useful. Mothering is my new favorite.

Other blogs:
adventuresinbabywearing.com
minkcoatandvelvetsweatpants.blogspot.com

Don't let What to Expect scare you. I got a couple chapters into it, picked up on its alarmist tone, and put it back down. There are better books out there.

Can't wait to read the baby-related tips you come up with for saving money!

Congratulations Kacie! Very excited for you! I've read all the books you mentioned and they are very good and give you lots of technical support. The one book I recommend to ALL soon-to-be Moms is Ina May's Guide to Childbirth It is written by the worlds top midwife and it will give you some technical details, but from the woman's perspective, not a medical one. The book turned me from someone petrified (Knock me out and get it out) of childbirth to someone who knew that I could do it! And do it I did, twice, with no interventions of any kind, all thanks to that book. It empowered me as a woman and mother. Can't recommend it enough. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll be amazed! :) Best of luck sweetie!

American Baby offers (or used to) give 6 free issues of their magazine. Try their website (it's a Meredith Publication, same publisher of the Better Homes and Gardens Mag).

Back when I thought I might be expecting, I started researching all sorts of books - in particular "What To Expect When You're Expecting". From what I gathered, it seemed like it wasn't a very good guide. While some people liked it, a lot of people seemed to think it was too negative. They said it especially didn't help a working mother-to-be - as in, the things they recommended were just impossible when you have a full-time job. It seems to focus on extreme scenarios, and many women said it ended up scaring them more than helping. It also followed the pattern of "We don't know how ___ affects pregnancy, so just avoid it." Many women wrote that they got so frustrated and felt so guilty that they recommended not reading it at all. Since I'm the type of person that feels very guilty when I don't listen to the advice of an "expert", I decided to pass on that book even if someone gave it to me.

All this research ended up being for naught at the time, of course, but hopefully someday I'll be able to use it.

I just read the useless baby items list - I have to say that I disagree with the author on ONE point - the Changing Table. We use our changing table ALL THE TIME. I know a ton of moms use the bed or the floor, but I LOVE my changing table. It keeps our diaper items organized and saves my back from bending over a lower surface. Plus now my son is older, it keeps him from crawling away during changes (which happened to me when I tried changing him on the floor recently). Also, I can't tell you how many times he has peed on the table - I'm so glad it wasn't my sheets!

I loved Your Pregnancy Week by Week but couldn't stand What to Expect. It was too negative for me. I love babycenter.com and the little magazines they sent out. I'd also recommend signing up at pampers.com and if you'll be using formula, the formula manu websites.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I'm going to do my best to track down those titles at my library, or pick them up on PaperBackSwap.

Thanks for the web sites, as well. I love discovering new sites!
