I love Aldi too, I buy all of the basics there I can, then fill in the gaps at Costco and Whole Foods for the “specialty items.” Great Post and lovely flowers.

Never heard of Aldi.
All those thing you mentioned are the nice things that still bring people to small stores. They give you that personal touch and allow you to feel that you are a human and should be treated as one, rather then being treated as just another customer.
With the shopping cart thing, it’s a great idea and I don’t see why more stores don’t have the same system. Theft of shopping carts go down, no one wants to lose a quarter (although here you put in a dollar, and anyone passing by on the ground will pick up a dollar).

This past week was actually my first time to try Aldi’s, and I am so glad that you posted this! Now I can go back even even more informed. I didn’t know about the cart thing when I arrived, but thankfully, I had my daughter’s nice stroller to put her in that has a basket underneath. I knew I would probably be getting only few items there, anyway. I actually was fairly impressed with some of their produce items, namely their baby carrots (which I know is seen by some as a needless expense, but I use so many carrots in cooking that I would be spending so much time I don’t have cutting them up), which were only .89 for a pound.
I was also impressed with their cereal. My husband and I both agree that it tastes just like name brand. I was a little disappointed in the lack of variety of canned goods like beans and tomatoes, but I get those cheap enough at Walmart that it doesn’t bother me too much. I definitely plan on making Aldi’s a part of my weekly shopping experience.
The cashier was super nice, too, as I didn’t know that it was debit card or cash only. I had my debit card, which I always run as a credit card most places and never input the pin, so I don’t even know what it is! I rarely have any cash on me. Thankfully, I was able to step out of line and give my hubby a quick call to get the pin, and the cashier was so gracious!

I was disappointed that our local Aldi doesn’t beat prices on most things we buy at the local Giant. It has other good-looking stuff, but if we wouldn’t buy it from Giant, buying it for less is still spending more.

There are probably a few small differences on things we occasionally buy, but not enough to check it out every time, I guess.

That is a great post. Someone asked me recently about Aldis and I wish I could have put it into words like you did. I used to shop there when they were around the corner basicly. I agree it was easy to shop. They closed the store and now we have to drive to another town. Save-A-Lot is closer but almost like them. Only real difference is they sell beer/wine and a lot of name brand items. LOLConnie's last blog post..saving money

Oh, I love Aldi! I go about once a week, before I hit the other stores.

The store I frequent doesn’t feel as clean as I would like, honestly, but you can’t beat the prices for snacks, cereal, and canned goods. Also, every once in a while they will have an odd lot of some namebrand product. I have not had the best luck with produce, but that may vary by location.

Everyone does seem friendly there, and the stores are very well organized to get you in and out quickly.

I love Aldis too…but read the labels. Quite a few products are from China and other countries. Fresh garlic, China…frozen fish, China…honey…a mix of domestic and from South America.
Our closest Aldis is about an hour away, so I stock up on staples when I go, about every other month. I love having baking supplies, canned milk, tamato sauce, pasta, and canned fruit veggies and soups on hand all the time.

I had no idea that stores like Aldi exists! I love the return the cart idea. Probably a little inconvenience for moms who’ll have to carry their baby back to the car, but it makes for a safer less cluttered parking lot. I also like the fact that you bag the groceries yourself. Sometimes I’ll bag anyway because I tend to feel bad when there’s no bagger and the cashier is left to do double duty while I’m just standing there watching. For cheaper prices, I wouldn’t mind the extra work. Wish we had an Aldi, but there doesn’t seem to be one in my radius. Oh well. Good to know these stores exist!

I love aldis. I have even discovered the online menu planner that is the website. I buy everything there. The quality of the food is as good as those from the big stores. I finallly realized it when I started by Aldi's seasoning salt and it tastes exactly the same as Lawry's seasoning salt and it is much cheaper.1stopmom's last blog post..Saturday Roundup: where’s the good stuff?
