My free swimsuit–cuz ‘free’ is my favorite price!

I’ve been searching for a suitable (heh) swimsuit for a few months now. I wanted a tankini-style suit that would give me a decent amount of coverage.
Using MyPoints.com and my debit card rewards program, I earned $30 in Target gift cards since mid-January, for the purpose of buying a swimsuit.
I headed to the clearance rack in the swimwear section and found a few to try on.
The one-piece styles fit me horribly. I guess I have a long torso because when I put them on, the bra part was near my stomach. Uh, hi, I’m not 97 years old.
I settled on a tankini top and a skirtini bottom. I liked the adjustable top, and the skirtini bottom made me feel much less self-conscious about myself. It’s not the hottest look ever, but what do I care? I’m happily married. And, it is cute enough and I don’t think I’ll have to worry about flashing beachgoers.
The pieces were $8.98 each, with no sales tax (PA doesn’t collect sales tax on clothing).
I had enough left on my gift cards to buy a new pair of flip-flops, a package of special cookies Shane was wanting to try, and a cool beverage from the Target Starbucks–purchases that left about $0.11 on my gift card.
I’m glad I went about earning gift cards for this purchase, since it wasn’t an immediate need. It’s nice to have a new swimsuit without it affecting our regular budget.

  1. It’s very cute! Good job :) I love being able to spend gift cards on non-necessities, or at least needs that aren’t as critical as food and water. It makes me feel like I have a little bit more freedom in my budget without wrecking the regular budget.

  4. No sales tax on clothes in PA?!?!? I am so jealous!!! I live in Texas, and last month I spent over $300 on some new clothes for work, and I spent almost $30 in sales tax! I was furious. In Texas, sales tax is 8.25%, regardless of what you buy (I think grocery store food is the only exception). Ick!

  5. I just love MyPoints. It’s so easy. :) Great job!

  8. This is funny because I have the exact opposite problem but the same solution!

I am 5′ (ok, ok, I’m 4’11″…give a short girl a break!). My torso is obviously short, so one-piece swimsuits leave a TON of extra fabric in my waist.

I first bought a tankini top with a skirt bottom and I *love* them! I ended up buying two more sets (on clearance at Kohl’s).

I’m so glad there’s more variety in swimsuits these past couple of years. I hated it when your only two choices were a one-piece or a bikini :)

  9. that is the most adorable swimsuit i have ever seen! that is exactly what i have been looking for, too…something with a little more coverage but doesn’t make me feel like a grandma. great find!
