I just signed up with the AC Neilsen homescan panel

I’m on a waiting list, but I’m in line to receive a scanning device from AC Neilsen.

From what I understand, it’s a market research panel, and you just scan the barcodes of everything you buy. They compensate you with points that can be redeemed for prizes (I don’t know how good these might be).

I just think it sounds like an interesting way for me to take a closer look at what I’m buying each week. It might help me see some trends that previously went unnoticed.

If I can get some gift cards or prizes out of it, so much the better.

  1. I actually was a member. You scan everything. If you order out, buy gas, visit a store, or do a survey. You dial in ONCE per week. You do their online stuff and collect points. If you for any reason can’t do the program for X number of weeks, they will drop you and ask for their scanner back. It was fun untill the stress set in. Good Luck to you! I was only on the list for a few months before I got my scanner.

  2. I signed up for this a few weeks ago and last week I got an email telling me that I am approved and they will be sending the scanner out soon. I’ve done several online surveys and I’ve gotten paid sveral $8.00 checks and $3.00 checks. I feel sure that Neilsen will compensate fairly for our time. I’m excited about doing it. It sounds like it could be fun :-)!

  3. I am currently scanning all my stuff. I have been doing it for a little over a month. It is a big time commitment for me and I am not so sure they rewards are worth it. I am giving it 6 months before I make a decision, but so far think it is more time than it’s really worth.

  4. I was a member for a short time as well. At first, it was fun to scan everything. But, once the novelty wore off, it became a hassle. It was a big time committment and with 2 small kids, I just couldn’t do it any longer.

    Good luck with your try at it! Maybe you’ll have better luck with it!

  5. I feel the same as everyone else. It was a bigger hassle than it was worth for me. I just was not dedicated to doing it. Everyone is different so maybe it will work for you.

  6. I agree with the other posts. It was too much time every week and takes awhile to earn prizes.

  7. Hmm…based on what you guys are telling me, I’m not so excited about this after all.

    If I’m presented with a scanner, I might just decline it now.

  8. On the brighter side, Micah’s family did it and they didn’t have much of a problem with it. It felt a little time consuming at times, but I don’t think more than the CVS stuff you’ve done. I just signed up with a similar group…we’ll see if/how I like it

  9. I’m in agreement with most of the others – It was fun at first, but became a hassle and very time consuming, especially if I did a big grocery trip. Some of the stores were auto-programmed with the prices so all I had to do was scan and enter the quantity – those weren’t so bad. But I shopped at more stores that didn’t have the prices programmed, so I had to sit there with my receipt and find each thing as I scanned it and then enter the price – that was not very fun. I didn’t stick with it long enough to earn enough points to get anything. It just wasn’t worth it to me. But I’m sure for some, it’s no problem!

  11. I have been scanning for over a year now. I love it. The gifts that I have gotten for scanning make it worth scanning. I will continue to do it as long as I can, or they will let me.
