When we were in an apartment, we had one oil-filled heater, and didn't have to turn our heat on until February. It heated the whole apartment all by itself last year- and paid for itself in one month. Our electric bill went DOWN when we got it.

When we bought a house, we got a second heater, and they are doing the bulk of the job heating the house right now, thought the heat does come on when it gets really cold outside- we have he thermostat set to 62.

I'm convinced the oil-filled heaters are safer, too, since they're only warm to the touch when on, and there's no metal that's getting red-hot, possibly a fire hazard.
