It was an honor to win the award. I really do take pride in being cheap. Most people view cheapskate as a dirty word, but I don't think so. The money that I save on the little things help me so that I can be more generous later. The refrigerator light might sound extreme, but that started because I was just trying to eliminate every source of energy that I can. I was working from 8am to 10pm every day and was gone on weekends. My kitchen had a lot of natural light, and as a bachelor I really only had 3 or 4 items in the refridgerator anyways. But here's a funnier story that my mother in law told me: My mother in law is a shy, sweet, minds-her-own business person. She needed some sand for a project and when she hunted it down at Home Depot, there was only small bag with no price anywhere and a slit that was leaking sand. The salesperson said, sorry, can't sell it to you because it's damaged and I can't track the price. So SHE SAID, no problem, you can just give it to me because you'll have to throw it away anyway. (I LOVE THAT LOGIC!!) And she got her sand! We do have a local Ollies store and I've found some good bargains there - actually, food can be pretty cheap and sometimes quite good brands. However, there must be some cheapo factory that supplies places like the dollar stores and Ollies with really junky stuff because some of it is made so cheaply that it's useless. This was back in 2002. My sister and I loaded down my mini-van with tons of stuff! It took me 3 years to finish off the Zatarain's rice boxes we got for free!
